Moored off the coast of Flissengen, the apartments are none other than the orange escape capsules used on oil production platforms in seas and oceans around the globe.
They were first put into production in the early 1970s. The houses, not exceeding 4.25 meters in diameter and equipped with bio-toilets, guarantee their guests complete isolation from the outside world. Not all tourists will agree to live in such conditions, but those who wish can be accommodated in round capsules for three people.
Such capsules were first used for purposes other than their intended purpose in 2004, as part of an art project. Their owner Denis Audendijk intends to place eight more ready-to-use orange mini-hotels in the center of Amsterdam and in the city of Nantes in France.
A basic option is available to guests. It includes an overnight stay in a sleeping bag and an emergency food supply. There is also a James Bond-style deluxe option. If anyone remembers - a similar capsule was used during the filming of the series “From Russia with Love”.
The luxury package includes fur sleeping bags with silk lining, DVD player and disks with James Bond movies, a small bar with sparkling wines and a collection of vodkas from which you can make a martini cocktail according to the principle “shake but do not stir”.
The unique mini-hotels are already open from May to October, until the first cold weather. So thrill-seekers can get ready to leave. The Den Haag capsule hotel behaves like a float on the water surface and sways at the slightest gust of wind.
